Convicted of criminal contempt for deliberately violating a court order to stop targeting Latinos based solely on ethnicity and detaining them without any evidence of criminal activity - a case that cost Arizona taxpayers nearly $70 million.
Latinos were 4 to 9 times more likely to be stopped in traffic stops in Maricopa County according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Regarding the judge’s ruling that he was racially profiling people, Arpaio said, “With the same circumstances, I’d do it all over again.”

Under his watch, the jail system became known for inhumane conditions including mistreatment of juveniles and people with mental illness, causing deaths by asphyxiation, beatings, and denial of basic health care. Taxpayers have paid more than $142 million in payouts to the families of people who died in jails, court awards and attorneys’ fees.
Asked about detention conditions, Arpaio responded, “I already have a concentration camp…it’s called Tent City.”
